Bare Hill Rowing Learn to Row

Located at Bare Hill Pond, Harvard, MA
Classes operate on a weekly cycle starting on June 24 and ending on August 9

BASICS 1
2 one-hour classes offered on Monday and Tuesday
For Beginners (No experience) - Youth (rising 6th grader) to Adults

This class is for the complete beginner with no rowing experience. The fundamentals of the sport of rowing is taught in two 1-hour classes, offered 2 days a week, with no more than 4 Youth and 2 Adults per class, or 4 Adults if there are no Youth participants. This is a great starter class for anyone interested in joining our scholastic team in the fall.

You will learn terminology and boat basics and how to navigate. Sculling (rowing with 2 oars) is done in stable, flat-bottomed boats. This is the best development class to prepare you for further rowing instruction and is a prerequisite for moving up to higher level classes.

Prerequisite: Swim Test required. (Test is only required to be taken one time and is good for all our classes. BABR swim test on file meets this requirement).

BASICS 2
one-hour classes offered on Wednesday and Thursday
For Beginners (limited experience) - Youth (rising 6th grader) to Adults

This class takes the Beginner to the next step. The fundamentals of the sport of rowing will be taught in two 1-hour classes, offered 2 days a week, with no more than 4 Youth and 2 Adults per class, or 4 Adults if there are no Youth participants. You will continue to learn terminology, boat basics, how to navigate and a few basic drills to increase your understanding of the rowing stroke. Sculling (rowing with 2 oars) will be done in stable, flat-bottomed boats. Basics 2 prepares you for further rowing instruction and is a prerequisite for moving up to higher level classes.

This is the next step to an introduction to rowing for someone interested in joining our scholastic team in the fall.

Prerequisite: Completion of Basics 1 is required. Swim Test required. (Test is only required to be taken one time and is good for all our classes. BABR swim test on file meets this requirement).

INTERMEDIATE
2 classes offered on Friday and Saturday
For those who have completed BASICS 1 & 2 - Youth (rising 6th grader) to Adults

Intermediate sculling is for the individual who has completed Learn to Row Basics sculling program (in a “tub”) or has previous rowing experience. Taught in two 1:20 classes, offered 2 days a week, with no more than 4 Youth and 2 Adults per class.

This class will take you to the next level of sculling or provide a refresher course for those who have been out of rowing for a while. Scullers will move into a regular (narrower) width boat. The goal of the class is to help you improve your rowing skills, teach you about balancing a boat and add simple workouts for you to execute.

This is a perfect progression in the introduction to rowing for someone interested in joining our scholastic team in the fall.

Prerequisites:  LTR Basics 1 & 2 or has previous rowing experience is required. Passing a flip test is mandatory and will be part of the beginning of the class. If you passed a flip test at the end of your LTR class, that will be counted. Coaches will determine a participant's class readiness in their discretion. Swim Test required.
(Test is only required to be taken one time and is good for all our classes. BABR swim test on file meets this requirement).

A flip test shows your ability to flip a single while in it and then get back into the boat without assistance. A coach will supervise this test. If you are unable to complete getting back into the single, you will be required to wear a waist style life preserver. It looks like a fanny pack and can be worn while rowing.

Registration Policy
  • Harvard residents will be given a priority registration period before programs open to non-residents. Our classes are open to all regardless of which town you reside in. Non-residents pay an additional $10 tariff. All registration requirements and payment must be turned in before the first day of class.
  • Classes are limited to 6 participants – max of 4 Youth and an additional 2 spots for Adults, or 4 Adults if no Youth are registered.  Registration takes place on a rolling basis until a class is filled. Time of online sign up will determine priority and placement in any class.
Parking at Pond
  • Harvard residents WITHOUT beach parking stickers and for non-residents: NO parking at the beach for summer rowing. Please use the lot at the top of the hill (below the library lot). It’s a 5’ walk to the pond on the path to the right of the road.
  • Harvard residents WITH beach parking stickers who are only participating in the rowing program are also asked to park in the lot at the top of the hill (not library) as well. This is to ensure parking at the beach for those folks taking programs offered by the town. BHRA requests your cooperation.
